CHAPTER FOUR

Two days until Christmas

It had only been two days since I’d last seen Dash, but I missed him. Not just the man, but Dash the reindeer, my favourite boy. Only two days since I’d left Pip in the pub, and he’d agreed to take care of Dash for me. The thought of which left me conflicted because I knew Pip would take good care of Dash, but on the other hand, it should be me who took him for walks along the shore, me who brushed his fur, me who snuck him his favourite type of moss. Only two days but it already felt like a lifetime.

I’d finished work for the day. Mum and Dad had come over to check on me since I’d missed Sunday lunch and I looked tired, according to my mother. My attempt to convince them I was fine hadn’t been successful if the worried glance they’d exchanged when they thought I wasn’t paying attention was any indication.

I paced my living room, chewing on my lip, nervous at the fact it was less than an hour until the test flight. What if Dash shifted in mid-air? What if they crashed? I should be there. And it was killing me that I couldn’t be.

Before I wore a hole in the floor, I headed for the kitchen and pulled flour and sugar from the cupboards. I’d whip up a batch of gingerbread—maybe make a house and decorate it. My mum would love it, and I hoped it would distract me until the test flight was over and Pip could tell me how it went.

The aroma of sweet gingerbread filled my cabin, and whilst that usually comforted me, today it didn’t help soothe my agitation. For what must be the thousandth time in the last ten minutes, I checked the clock on the oven again. The test flight should’ve been over and done by now. The sky out of the window was inky black yet my phone was quieter than a kid sneaking down to check if Santa had been. I couldn’t take the waiting anymore, so I fired off a text to Pip to find out what was going on. His reply took a while, the dots dancing and stopping several times before I received his message:
